Embracing the Fog

Embracing the FogThe fog horn sounded in the still morning hours amid the placid lake.    I did not see the boats or the troubled shore of which the  fog horn warned.   The fog horn sounded persistently, hauntingly, beckoning, guiding  and calling:   be attentive, be aware, be careful, notice!   The waters are different this morning, you cannot see clearly as other mornings.   Life is not as usual, there is fog, change is taking place.  Take a different course, there is danger ahead.   How like the fog of the morning is the fog of life!

How often do we encounter the fog of life, situations with unknown outcomes.    Life situations,  gnawing at us, unresolved.  Yet in the midst of the fog of life something “calls”  from deep within to be attentive, be aware, to notice life’s changes, life is not as usual.   There may be changes ahead, we sense.  The “something” from deep within is the divine spirit’s  persistence calling us to be aware and attentive as the fog of life may call us to change course.

There is something beautiful about the fog of life as it calls us to deeper trust, to hold the beauty of life in a healthy tension as we await the unfolding.

Jesus talks about the fog of life in  a passage in the Christian Scriptures John 16:12-15.  Jesus tells the disciples that he has much more to tell them but they cannot bear it now.  Yet when the spirit of truth comes, Jesus says,  she will guide you into all truth.   The treasure of the divine spirit is for all, Jesus says.      Like a fog horn beckoning in the distance, the spirit of truth  persistently guides, encourage,  heightens  attentiveness and awareness.  How like the fog of the morning is the fog of life.

How like the fog horn’s  persistent sound beckoning, guiding, calling to be attentive, be aware, be careful, notice –is the loving persistence of the divine spirit!

What are the situations in our lives that invite us to be attentive to the divine spirit’s persistent nudge?   What is the “fog” in your life?  To what does the divine spirit beckon?

Our invitation is to embrace the fog of life.

Blessings and peace
